勝は今年の夏はサマースクール終了後に一時帰国する予定です。

６月末には帰国するので、古巣のトヨタスイミングにお願いして選手登録をしてもらうよう頼んできました。

７月には愛知県選手権と三河地区杯があるので、両大会のエントリーもお願いしてきました。

２年ぶりの日本の大会への出場になります。

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's swimming head coach Bob Bowman announced that he will be leaving the program following the Beijing Olympics to assume chief executive officer responsibilities at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club and will prepare swimmers for Olympic and international competition. Bowman will continue in his capacity as U-M head coach, including with the Wolverine Swim Camps, and as the Club Wolverine high performance coach through the 2008 Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb. (June 29-July 6).

"This is a professional business opportunity that I felt I needed to pursue," Bowman said. "It has been a privilege and honor for me to coach at the University of Michigan, and my four years here have been extremely meaningful. I have enjoyed working with the student-athletes and representing the University, and I plan to continue a close relationship with U-M for a long time to come."

"I am sorry to see Bob leave, but this was an unexpected, rare business opportunity that he could not pass up," said U-M director of athletics Bill Martin. "This has been an exciting time for Michigan swimming, and I'm happy that he was able to conclude his tenure here on a high note with a Big Ten championship. I look forward to continuing a relationship with him."

Bowman concluded his fourth season as U-M's head coach in March, guiding the Wolverines to the 2008 Big Ten Conference title and a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. In four seasons, he compiled a 30-8-1 record in dual meets, including 21-1-1 against Big Ten opponents.

The Wolverines finished among the top eight nationally all four years during Bowman's tenure, including sixth-place finishes in 2005 and 2008. At the Big Ten Championships, U-M finished third in 2005 and 2006, missed capturing the Big Ten title by just four points in 2007, and improved on that runner-up finish by winning the 2008 championship in front of a home crowd at Canham Natatorium. Twice Bowman earned Big Ten Coach of the Year honors (2007 co-recipient, 2008), and he mentored three swimmers to six NCAA individual titles.

Michigan visit

出張にからめて１日だけミシガンに来て、勝の寮に泊まらせてもらいました。

寮についてからは、久しぶりに勝のM3を引っ張り出してモールまでドライブしてきました。

M3のほうは、先日のバッテリ上がり以降、オーディオがリセットされてしまい、使用するためのCodeがわからないため、CDが聞けないと困っていました。

また、先日警察にサイドウィンドに貼ってあったフィルムを剥がすように言われたので、すぐに剥がしたそうですが、その糊がガラスに残っていたため、アルコールを買ってきて二人で綺麗に取りましたが、結構大変な作業で、手がベタベタになりました。

夕食はコーチと一緒に日本食を食べましたが、サマータームになっているので、8時ごろまで太陽が残っていました。

勝の寮、すっかり雪もなくなっていますが、木々はまだ葉っぱをつけていません。あと1ヶ月もすると青々とした葉っぱが茂ってくることでしょう。

レンタカーのポンティアックG6．ハンドリングはクイックですが、リニアさがなく、足回りも柔らかく安定性がありませんでした。

３日目最終日の決勝が終了しました。勝は400Frリレーに出場しました。タイムは午前中の100Fr予選とあまり変わらないタイムでした。

学校対抗のほうは、ミシガン大学が大幅リードのまま逃げ切りました。MSUは最下位となってしまいました。来年は最下位脱出をして欲しいと思います。そのためには勝がしっかりタイムを更新しないと。

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Freshmen Kevin Puskaric and L. Colby Ward and sophomore diver Ivan Zalessov highlighted MSU's showing during the third and final day of the Big Ten Men's Swimming & Diving Championships. Each athlete scored for the Spartans, who finished 10th in the team standings with 159 points.

Puskaric delivered an outstanding performance in the 200 breast, posting a 1:59.83 in the finals, good for sixth place. He clocked an even better time in the preliminary round on Saturday morning (1:59.21). The time was good for an NCAA `B' qualifying performance.

Ward was MSU's top performer in the distance free, placing 17th in the mile with a time of 15:31.22. His performance, like, Puskaric's was an NCAA `B' qualifying time.

Zalessov, MSU's top diver, placed 15th in platform diving with a total score of 256.00. He scored in every time during the meet.

Michigan won the team title with 1,081.5 points. Indiana (855) placed second and Minnesota (682.5) finished third. The meet featured eight of the nation's top 30 teams.

３日目の予選が終了しました。勝は100Frに出場しましたが、今回もベストが出ませんでした。100Frは高校のJuniorにベストが出てから３年間遠ざかっています。

親友から届いた応援のメールにもありましたが、「楽しんで良い結果が出れば最高だろうけど、生活環境の違いや言葉のハンディーを乗り越えて頑張ってるんだからすごいと思う。」と励まされました。
確かにそうです。勝負事だから良い結果を求めてしまいますが、その過程で努力することで、人間的にも成長もできていることを喜びたいと思います。

午後の決勝では400Frリレーを泳ぐことになっています。今年のBig Tenでの最後の泳ぎになりますので、力いっぱい応援しようと思います。

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Senior Adam Schmitt placed ninth in the 200 free finals, Michigan State's top individual finish in the league meet so far, to lead the Spartan men's swimming & diving team at the Big Ten Championships Friday at Michigan. MSU currently stands 10th with 111 team points.

Schmitt clocked a 1:37.56, just shy of Ohio State's Jacob Busch for eighth place. Schmitt's time was good for an NCAA 'B' qualifying standard. Eleven swimmers in the event hit the 'B' cut.

Sophomore divers Ivan Zalessov and David Garry continued their solid performances, with each diver placing in three-meter diving. Zalessov finished 15th with a score of 296.30, and Garry was 17th with a 294.50 total.

The 800 free relay team also made an NCAA 'B' cut, posting a time of 6:35.90. Schmitt was the team's anchor, and senior Jason Vadney swam the lead leg, with sophomores Sho Koba and Gabe Strickler in the middle. The Spartans finished 10th in the event, just behind Purdue for ninth.

Michigan leads the team event with 742.5 points. Indiana (602) and Minnesota (469.5) are second and third, respectively. The meet concludes

１日目の決勝が終わりました。学校対抗の得点では、最初の200Frリレーで初めのヒートに出場したミシガン大学が、後のヒートのチームにタイムで勝ち、勢いに乗って２位を大きくリードしています。200Frリレーで勝ったときは、ボブボウマンコーチやマイケルフェルプスコーチも飛び上がって喜んでいました。

MSUはダイビング以外での個人種目での得点が無く、二つのリレーでアイオワに勝ったのですが、ダイビングではアイオワの得点が大きかったため最下位に甘んじています。
明日は勝にも得点してもらえればと思います。

ちなみに、今回は８レーンあるミシガン大学のプールの６レーンを使って大会を開催しているため、決勝はA・B・Cの３ヒートあり、各ヒートとも得点となります。

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Sophomore divers Ivan Zalessov and David Garry each scored in one-meter diving and the 400 medley relay team made an NCAA 'B' qualifying standard to highlight the Michigan State men's swimming & diving team after the first day of the Big Ten Men's Swimming & Diving Championships. MSU is in 10th place with 56 points, just behind Iowa. No. 4 Michigan leads the team standings with 344 points.

Zalessov posted a solid 13th-place finish on the one-meter board with a score of 281.80. Garry was 18th with a total of 261.65.

"Ivan and David were outstanding on the board," head swimming coach Matt Gianiodis said. "Overall, we performed well, but this is the best conference in the country. Everyone at this meet is very fast and talented."

MSU placed ninth in both the 200 free and 400 medley relays. The 400 medley squad (Gabe Strickler, kevin Puskaric, Marcus Poteete and Adam Schmitt) recorded a time of 3:22.48, which is good for an NCAA 'B' qualifying standard.

The Big Ten features seven of the nation's top 18 ranked teams in the most recent CSCAA poll, and another team receiving votes in the poll.

Day two of the championships begins Friday at noon with the 400 IM preliminary round.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Michigan State men's swimming & diving will take its most talented team in years to the Big Ten Men's Swimming & Diving Championships this weekend. The three-day event begins with the 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free preliminary rounds on Thursday, Feb. 28 at noon at Michigan's Canham Natatorium.

"I feel like right now, this is the best team we've had in a long time," head coach Matt Gianiodis said. "But we'll see how we get through the weekend."

The Spartans are led by senior Adam Schmitt, who is the team's top performer in the sprint freestyles and IM events. Schmitt owns the team's top times this season in the 50 free (20.89), 100 free (44.77), 200 free (1:38.34) and the 200 IM (1:51.78). His 1:38.34 200 free performance, which was set Jan. 25 against Oakland, is a Busbey Natatorium record. With the clock ticking on his Spartan career, Schmitt is poised to score in multiple events at the league meet.

"This is his last Big Ten meet, and he's a leader now," Gianiodis said. "He needs to swim like a leader, and I think he will."

Freshman L. Colby Ward and sophomore Krzysztof Olszewski are the team's top distance swimmers. Ward owns MSU's best times in the 500, 1,000 and mile free, while Olszewski is second in each event. Olszewski is also at the top of MSU's 400 IM list with a time of 4:04.93.

Freshman kevin Puskaric and sophomore Marcus Poteete lead MSU in the breaststroke and butterfly, respectively. Puskaric is at his best in the 200 breast, where his 1:59.14 top time is good enough to make the NCAA `B' qualifying standard. Poteete, an Olympic Trials qualifier, has clocked a team-best 49.68 in the 100 fly this season, and 1:52.14 in the 200 fly. Both times are just short of the NCAA `B' standards.

Sophomore Jon LaRocque is the team's top backstroke swimmer. He set team top times in the 50 back (23.91) and 100 back (51.22) at the Ohio State Invitational in November, and posted a team-best 1:52.48 in the 200 back in the season finale against Oakland on Jan. 25. The Spartans also have two strong divers in sophomores Ivan Zalessov and David Garry.

Michigan State will need top performances from everyone on the team, as the Big Ten Championships field is a tough one. Seven of the nation's top 18 teams in the latest CSCAA poll are Big Ten squads, and an eighth team is among those receiving votes. No. 4 Michigan, No. 7 Indiana and No. 8 Minnesota highlight the 10-team field.

"It's a really strong field. I think it's the strongest field in the country without a doubt," Gianiodis said. "There are seven teams ranked, and I feel Wisconsin (receiving votes) is a top 25 team."

Competition begins with preliminary rounds at noon each day. Minnesota is the reigning Big Ten champion.
