先週の土曜日に行われたPromの写真が送られてきました。PromはPromenadeの略で、高校や大学の卒業記念パーティーのことのようです。勝もタキシードを借りて出席しました。
Pioneer HSの水泳部メンバーが、Robertの家に集まり、みんなでディナーを食べた後にパーティーに行ったそうです。

Swimmer of te Year

MISCA(Michigan Inter-Scholastic Ｓｗｉｍ Coaches Association)のSwimmer of the Yearの盾が勝の所に届きました。昨年に続いて2度目の受賞です。
昨年の盾は郵便屋さんの運搬の際にダメージがありましたが、今年は大丈夫だったようです。

'Sho Time'

Saturday was the final curtain call for "Sho Time" in Ann Arbor. And Sho Koba didn't disappoint.

A senior who moved to Ann Arbor from Japan with his family in the summer of 2003, Koba added three more state swimming titles -- and a pair of state records -- to his impressive list of career accomplishments, leading Ann Arbor Pioneer to its fourth championship in five years.

Koba, a 2008 Olympic hopeful for his native Japan, defended his titles in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events, setting a Division I record (1 minute, 38.16 seconds) in the latter. He also anchored Pioneer's 400 freestyle relay team to victory, also in state-record time (3:06.77).

In the stands cheering was one tired but elated father. Hiro Koba and his wife, who moved to Ann Arbor after his job transfer to the Toyota Tech Center, returned home in January.

But Sho, whose sense of humor has made him a hit with his classmates, stayed behind, moving in with teammate Jason Hass and his family to finish out the school year.

"At the airport when they left, there was no hugging or anything like that -- their culture's a lot different than ours, obviously," said Pioneer coach Dennis Hill, who now has 27 state titles to his credit -- 14 of them with the Pioneer boys team.

"But there were definitely tears. It was a tough decision for them. But I think it has been good for Sho -- he has really matured, his English has improved tremendously, and he really has dealt with it well."

His father said much the same Friday, barely 24 hours after arriving in Detroit from Japan and a whirlwind week of business travel in Europe to watch his son's final high school meet.

"It is a good opportunity for him -- a learning experience before he goes to college," said Hiro Koba, whose son will attend Michigan State University on a swimming scholarship in the fall while also continuing off-season training alongside Michael Phelps & Co. in Ann Arbor.

Sho and his parents have stayed in touch through weekly phone calls and e-mails, but Saturday's celebration certainly offered a more personal touch -- and that meant the world to Koba.

"I'm very happy they were here to see this," he said, smiling.

高校最後のState大会も、無事チャンピオンを獲得することができました。大会後のパーティーもみんな上機嫌で、あっと言う間に時間が過ぎていきました。

今から観戦に向かいます

昨日ミシガンに到着しました。あっちこっち回った後、宿泊させていただくRobertのゲストハウス(といっても私の日本の家より広い)に到着。泊まるところだけでなく、冷蔵庫の中には食材がいっぱい用意されており、お米も買ってくれていました。大変木を使ってもらって恐縮しています。

勝は昨日の練習後、チームメートみんなで頭髪のシェービングをして、その後チームディナーに行きました。ホームステイ先に戻ってきたので、顔を見てきましたが、元気そうでしたので安心でした。大会に備えてパートナーストレッチもしましたが、上手くテーパーできているようで、筋肉も柔らかく張りがありました。背中と広背筋は大きくなっているようでした。

ということで、これからＳｔａｔｅ大会の応援に行ってきます。カバさんの強い念力もあり、きっといい結果を残してくれると思います。

LOCAL SWIMMERS TO WATCH

Sho Koba (Pioneer, 200 freestyle, 100 freestyle)
The senior is the defending Division 1 champ in both events, and he set records at the SEC meet. He also holds the D-1 record in both events.

Jason Hass (Pioneer, 200 individual medley, 100 butterfly)
The junior made top-eight swims in both events at last year's championships, including a third-place performance in the 100 fly.

Kyle Begley (Saline, 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle)
The senior is a returning state qualifier. He placed seventh in the 200 at last year's Division 1 meet, and finished only behind Koba at the SEC meet.

Scott Yarbrough (Tecumseh, 100 breaststroke)
Yarbrough returns to the Division 2 state meet, where he finished eighth in the 100. His recent swim to a Southeastern Conference title will make him a top-five favorite this weekend in Ypsilanti.

Kirk Kumbier (Dexter, 200 IM, 100 breaststroke)
He finished fourth in the 100 at last year's Division 2 meet. He'll also swim on a pair of Dexter relays that should make strong showings this weekend.

Four climbs to the top of the awards stand hadn't changed Jason Hass' mind.

Never mind what the clock had indicated at Saturday's Southeastern Conference swim championships, the Pioneer High School junior still wasn't convinced the perfect race exists.

Maybe not. But Pioneer's final venture into the pool had proven close.

The Pioneers capped another SEC title run by breaking a 7-year-old pool record in the 400-yard freestyle relay, one of two pool marks and one of four conference records to tumble Saturday afternoon.

"It was good enough,'' Hass said of the 3-minute, 12.01-second time turned in by himself, Chris Buck, Robert Steele and Sho Koba that broke Toledo St. Francis' 1999 mark of 3:12.02. "I wouldn't say it was perfect, but I was very, very pleased ... You always have to have another Pioneer record up on that board.''

Pioneer registered a championship-best 670 points - 303 ahead of second-place Saline, which paced the rest of the seven-team field. The Hornets -led by Kyle Begley's win in the 500 free (4:55.08) and Joel Chambers league championship in 1-meter diving (428.34) captured conference runner-up honors for the second straight year.

Saline again slipped past SEC White champion Dexter (338) while Chelsea (313), Tecumseh (303), Adrian (160) and Lincoln (87) rounded out the league meet standings.

"This really shows our progress. We've gone from fighting to get third to going through a huge fight last year to get second and this year, there were a lot of teams really close to us,'' Saline's Begley said. "But in the end, we got second (place) again and that really shows that we've gotten to a certain level.''

But Pioneer remained on a pedestal well above the rest of the field, using the conference record books as motivation.

"It's always something new and exciting,'' Hass said. "Each (championship) is different than the one before.''

The Pioneers won nine of Saturday's 12 events, getting two individual wins from Hass (200 individual medley and 100 butterfly), two from Koba, who broke the one-day-old pool and SEC records he set Friday in the 200 free and the conference mark he set Friday in the 100 free. Other than Begley, Tecumseh's Scott Yarbrough captured the only other individual league title, winnining the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.29.

Chris and Pat Buck also delivered wins for the Pioneers, who also set two new SEC marks in the 200 and 400 free relays as a primer for its upcoming Division I state title defense.

"I think we're in pretty good shape,'' Pioneer coach Denny Hill said. "We have a little ways to go, but I think we're sitting pretty good.''

パリの凱旋門近くのホテルからの更新です。昨晩はMoulin　Rougeを見ましたが、なかなかよかったです。

勝はSECの決勝でも少しタイムを上げたようです。昨年の同大会と比較してもタイムが上がってきていますので、２週間後のState大会が楽しみです。

On a day when Pioneer High School continued its assault on the Southeastern Conference swimming record book, the rest of the seven-team field began its annual pursuit of second place.

The Pioneers used Friday's SEC preliminaries to set four conference marks, two of which were shattered by senior Sho Koba.

Koba set a league mark in the 200 freestyle (1:40.32), an event in which he also broke a 25-year-old Pioneer pool record by more than a second. Koba's second SEC record came in the 100 freestyle (46.51), breaking his own record set at last year's league meet.

Friday's championship setting certainly didn't hurt.

"There are many swimmers in here cheering on their teammates and a bigger audience and so there's more excitement,'' Koba said. "And the closer the state meet gets, the more exciting it gets.''

Pioneer also set a league record in the 200 freestyle relay (1:28.65) before closing out Friday's prelims with a record-settting swim in the 400 freestyle relay (3:12.16).

Overall, the Pioneers will be the top seed in 10 of the 11 swimming events. Tecumseh's Scott Yarbrough captured the No. 1 seed in the 100 breastroke after posting a time of 1:01.70.

"We can't be complaining,'' Pioneer coach Denny Hill said. "We swam pretty well.''

While the defending Division 1 state champions use the league meet as a primer for the upcoming state championships, the rest of the field uses Pioneer as a gauge for personal performance.

In today's championship heats, swimmers like Saline's Kyle Begley finds himself in the same 500 yard freestyle as Pioneer's Robert Steele and Chelsea's Rick Kinsey - a test he certainly welcomes with the state meet only two weeks away.

He'll also face off with Koba, Steele and Kinsey in the 200 free.

"Pioneer's one of the best teams in the state and I don't always get to swim against people like this in every meet,'' he said. "So this is good.

"Even though I'm a senior, we're looking at our younger guys and saying, 'One day, we're going to beat Pioneer.'''

Begley's not alone in his dependence on the higher level of competition to prepare himself for what lies ahead.

For Chelsea's Kinsey - who will compete at next month's Division 2 championships - uses a solid SEC field that included a pair of Division 1 entries as a confidence booster.

Kinsey enters today's championship heats as the fifth seed in the 200 free and the No. 2 seed in the 500 - an event he trimmed three and a half seconds off of his seed time.

キャプテンの父兄からのメール

Pioneer HSのキャプテンの一人、Dustin Hennigar のお父さんのDoug Hennigarｙより、下記のメールをいただきました。レースの様子が非常によくわかります。

Since you can't see some of these races I thought I might describe a couple of your son's recent races:

At the end of the Warrior relays Sho entered the water as anchor of the 4x100 Freestyle relay down by nearly 2 body lengths. When he entered the water I waited for him to regain the surface, expecting the gap to be reduced significantly. To my surprise he had only closed the gap by a few feet, an indication that his competitor also had a good start and streamline. I mentioned aloud to Dr. Steele that it looked like it would be tough for him to catch the leader. Almost as though he had heard me, but more likely realizing he could not wait for the second 50, he shifted gears and closed to within a half body length on the second 25. He then proceeded to out turn his competition, taking the lead with 35 yards to go, and winning by a full body length. I then commented to Dr. Steele "that was too easy!" I asked Liz for his split later and she said it was 46.3. A very impressive swim! He did get out of the water rotating and favoring one of his shoulders, but showed no signs of any residual soreness as he powered through the 200 freestyle last night against Saline HS. He narrowly missing Tony Anderson's 25 year old Pioneer pool record by .05 seconds. Tony (sophomore Andrew Anderson's father) figures he will be there to see it broken as your son has two more shots at it this year.

今回は200Frと200Frリレー&400Frリレーに出場したようです。

タイムは今シーズンのベストを出した1月28日の1:40.89には劣りますが、State大会を考えての前半をペースアップするトライがしっかりできたと思います。
勝の50Frの今シーズンベストは1月19日の200Frリレーの第一泳者だした22.01で、ターンを考えるとそこそこのペースです。続く25ヤードも25.05と狙いの24秒台には惜しくも届きませんでしたが、現時点でここまでいければOKかなと思います。後は後半をどれだけ耐えられるか。テーパー無しの段階で後半の100の50ヤードのラップを25秒台に納められる様になればと思います。

ちなみに200Frの途中ラップで、50Fr（22.79)と100Fr(49.89)のState大会標準記録を切っていますが、これは初めてのことになります。

リレーはどちらも気合が入っていないタイムです。400Frリレーは200Frの入りの100より遅いタイムです。コーチのDennisからの情報では、試合後は死んでいたと言っていましたので、200Frで力を使い果たしてしまったのかもしれません。

勝のホストファミリーよりビデオが届きました。1月の大会を撮影したものです。久し振りに勝の泳ぎを見ましたが、なかなか頑張っていました。でもアウェイの大会が多かったのですが、慣れないプールではターンのタイミングがイマイチに見えました。

勝のホームステイ先のホストファミリーは色々気を使ってくれて大変ありがたいです。勝のために日本食作りも勉強してくれています。

今シーズン、これまでのランキングトップタイムを出しているGrad Haven HSとのJoe Schmittと泳ぎましたが、二人ともこれまでのタイムを縮める事が出来ませんでした。(Joe Schmittのタイムは48.10) ちなみにJoe Schmittも今年の9月よりMichigan State Universityに入学して水泳をやりますので、勝のチームメイトになります。
Joe SchmittにはAdam Schmittというお兄さんがおり、同じくMichigan State Universityで泳いでいます。勝がアメリカに来て1年目のState大会の100Frでは、このAdam Schmittに負けてしまいました。

ROYAL OAK - Three of the state's top-five ranked Division 1 boys swim teams met Saturday, and Pioneer High School affirmed its No. 1 ranking from the Michigan Inter-Scholastic Swim Coaches Association.

The Pioneers beat third-ranked Birmingham Brother Rice 98-87 and fifth-ranked Grand Haven 117-68. Rice beat Grand Haven 109-77.

Pioneer won just one of the first six events, but took five of the last six. Their individual winners were Sho Koba in the 100- and 200-yard freestyles, Robert Steele in the 500 freestyle and Pat Buck in the 100 backstroke.

昨日1月27日の金曜日はChelsea HSとの対抗戦でした。勝からは連絡がありませんが、新聞の記事によると100Flyで優勝したようです。

The Pioneer High School boys swim team won 10 of 12 events Friday in a 123-60 victory at Chelsea.

Pioneer swept the three relays and got individual wins from Robert Steele (50-yard freestyle, 100 freestyle), Chris Buck (200 freestyle), Josh D'Angelo (200 individual medley), Sho Koba (100 butterfly), Jason Hass (100 backstroke).

Chelsea's winners were Sean Cleary (diving) and Rick Kinsey (500 freestyle).

テスト終了

勝の前期テストは終了し、今週末も金曜日と土曜日に大会があります。いつもテスト明けは慣れない勉強疲れで調子がイマイチですが、しっかり頑張って欲しいと思います。

Spurred by seven wins, the Pioneer High School boys swimming team swept a tri-meet Friday, defeating Tecumseh 103-83 and Lincoln 148-33. Tecumseh beat Lincoln 144-36.

Sho Koba led the Pioneers with a victory in the 500-yard freestyle in a Division 1 state-qualifying time of 4 minutes, 39.23 seconds.

Other individual winners for the Pioneers were: Peter Keeler (200 freestyle), Josh D'Angelo (200 individual medley), David Greiner (100 butterfly) and Chris Buck (100 freestyle).

Tecumseh had four individual winners: Scott Yarbrough (100 breaststroke), Neil Palmer (100 backstroke), Ryan Murphy (diving) and Jordan Lillie (50 free).

GROSSE POINTE - The Pioneer High School's boys swimming team remained unbeaten Thursday night when the Pioneers captured first-place finishes in 11 of 12 events in a speedy 132-53 victory over Grosse Pointe North.

Pioneer (3-0) registered the victory in just 37 minutes, 46 seconds.

"We told the kids to get ready to strap it on because as soon as they finished one event, we were going to start the next,'' Pioneer coach Denny Hill said.

Sho Koba set a new pool record with his win in the 200 individual medley, finishing in a time of 1:57.56 in one of four events that the Pioneers swept the top three places.

今週も木曜日と金曜日に高校の大会がありました。木曜日のレースでは200IMをプールレコードで泳いだそうで、友人のBonnieが新聞に載った記事をスキャンして送ってくれました。タイムは1:57.56ということですので、ベストタイムを0.26秒ほど更新したようです。

TOLEDO, OHIO - The Pioneer High School boys swimming team took its show out of state Friday night and returned with two dual-meet victories.

The Pioneers defeated host St. Francis High School, 113-72, and Dexter 127-59. Dexter lost to St. Francis, 115-71.

Chris Buck, Robert Steele and Sho Koba won two individual events apiece for the Pioneers and contributed to the victorious 400-yard freestyle relay.
Dexter's Mike Eberbach won the diving competition, and Kirk Kumbier won the 100 breaststroke by three seconds.

Pioneer finishes second at swimming invitational

CANTON - The tables were turned on the Pioneer High School boys swim team Saturday.

The Pioneers scored 277 points at Salem's Rock-Kilgore Swimming Invitational to finish behind Zeeland, which had 295.

At last year's Division 1 state meet, Pioneer easily beat the second-place Chix 305-200 to win the championship.

Northville was third with 217, followed by Livonia Stevenson (211), Canton (106) and Salem (61).

Pioneer won five of the "fast'' heats. Sho Koba was first in the 100-yard freestyle (47.17 seconds) and 200 freestyle (1 minute, 40.99 seconds), and the Pioneers won all three relays: the 200 medley (1:40.17), 200 freestyle (1:29.11) and 400 freestyle (3:16.13).

Pioneer HSのコーチDennis Hillより、先週末の大会結果を送っていただきました。金曜日と土曜日の二日連続で大会がありましたが、昨年のこの時期のタイム(2005年1月8日、15日、29日)と比べると結構いい感じです。
