Swimming and Diving Sweeps Ball State
Dec. 13, 2008
EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State swimming and diving teams defeated Ball State Saturday (Dec. 13) afternoon at McCaffree Pool. The men's team won 157.5-142.5 while the women won 158-138.
"We tried to give more of our kids the opportunity to swim well today, so I'm pretty encouraged by that," said MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis. "It was a little discouraging in that we lost a lot of close races that I thought we should have won. We had a lot of people swim well today though."
The Spartans got off to a quick start in the meet's first event - the women's 200-yard medley relay as Stephanie Fisher, Kerry Sodonis, Becca Ebner and Julie Kahn posted a time of 1:46.12, which was good for first.
Mike Van Beek started a string of three-consecutive Spartan wins when he took first in the 200-yard free with a time of 1:43.62. Sophomore Becca Ebner and senior Marcus Poteete then followed with a pair of first-place finishes in the 100 back with times of 59.89 and 53.12, respectively.
Two events later, MSU put together three more consecutive wins. After Joe Schmitt won the 100 breaststroke in 57.95, the Spartans' Heather Kiluk (2:06.19) and Ricky Forest (1:50.10) swept 200 butterfly.
Two events later, MSU's Chris Olszewski won the 400 IM with a time of 4:00.59 to give the Spartan men a slim 77-73 advantage after 19 events. MSU's women's team also was in the lead, 77-73, after 19 events.
The Spartan women divers put up a strong performance in the three-meter competition, sweeping the first three places. Senior Danielle Williams led the way with a 329.34, followed by Sarah Clay (297.00) and Jordan Jackson (263.55).
David Garry (311.10) and Brian Akers (261.97) placed one and two, respectively, on the one-meter board.
After the first diving break, the Spartans came out strong, winning six of the next seven events. Kahn (52.30) and Matt Massman (46.90) each won the 100 free, Cassie Hamilton (2:08.11) and Brian Rockwell (1:55.22) each placed first in the 200 backstroke. Sophomore kevin Puskaric (2:02.26) and Kiluk (5:03.65) followed, winning the 200 breaststroke and 500 freestyle, respectively.
With just four swimming events remaining, the Spartan divers help widen the MSU leads. Garry scored a lifetime-best 336.90 on the three-meter to lead MSU while Williams, Clay and Alycia Mokedanz took the top-three spots on the one-meter board.
The Spartans will hit the road for Florida after Christmas for their annual training trip and get back into action on Jan. 1, 2009, against Trinity Prep Aquatics and Limestone College.
