Spartans Break Records on First Day of TYR Sport Conference Cup

Senior Marcus Poteete swam a personal best in the 200 IM on Friday night.

Nov. 21, 2008

Final Stats

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Michigan State swimming and diving teams each turned in strong performances on day one of the TYR Sport Conference Cup in Evanston, Ill. on Friday (Nov. 21) night. After day one of the three team invitational, the MSU men's team is just four points out of first place with a total of 405 points. The women's team is also in second place with 414.5 points. Northwestern leads both the men's and women's competitions with 409 and 501.5, respectively.

Several swimmers headlined the Spartans' effort as senior Heather Kiluk, junior Jon LaRocque and the women's 400 medley relay team all set new varsity records. Kiluk won the 200 Yard IM with a time of 2:02.44 - breaking her pervious best, and school record, of 2:04.20. The women's 400 medley relay team of sophomores Stephanie Fisher and Becca Ebner, freshman Kerry Sodonis and junior Erinn Wertz closed out the evening with second place finish but their time of 3:45.80 set new school record.

"It was great, mainly because they had such good splits," said MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis. "I was here when the last record was broken so it is impressive."

The Spartans swept the 200 free relays as both the men's and women's teams placed first. Wertz, Fisher, senior Julie Kahn and junior Kara Wackerle swam the event for the women's team while LaRocque, senior Marcus Poteete and juniors Joe Schmitt and Matt Massman competed for the men.

In the morning session, LaRocque swam a 20.13 in the 50 free which broke the previous best mark of 20.17, set in 1990 by Mark Lisenby. Massman won the 50 free finals with a time of 20.44.

Poteete posted his best swim ever in the 200 IM and took second place with a time of 1:49.68. Schmitt also turned in a first place performance with a mark of 25.33 in the 50 yard breaststroke.

Another solid swim came courtesy of sophomore Alison Johnson, who cut close to seven seconds off her 500 free time to qualify for the Spartans' training trip.

"What Alison did really embodies what our whole team is about," said Gianiodis. "She really did a nice job tonight. We had great swims all over the place."

On the one-meter board, senior Danielle Williams placed first with a score of 290.40 while sophomore Jordan Jackson scored a 275.48 which was good for third.

The three teams - MSU, Northwestern and Kenyon - will be back in action tomorrow with the prelims beginning at 11 a.m. EST and the finals beginning at 6 p.m. EST.

Swimming and Diving Teams Sweep GVSU

Kevin Puskaric set a pool record in winning the 100 breaststroke in a time of 56.12.

Nov. 14, 2008

JENISON, Mich. - The Michigan State swimming and diving teams each picked up wins over Grand Valley State on Friday (Nov. 14) as the men's team won 158.5 - 82.5 while the women's team cruised to a 169-72 victory. The Spartans were dominant, wining 25 of the evening's 26 events. It was the second consecutive win for the women's team, which is now 2-3, and the first victory of the year for the men, who now stand at 1-1 on the season.

The dual meet took place at Jenison High School with a crowd of more than 650 in attendance.

"I think we had a record crowd tonight," said MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis. "Grand Rapids is a very good swimming community and I think everyone appreciated being here tonight. I hope we can do this again next year."

The Spartans turned in several exceptional performances and perhaps the most noteworthy were by sophomores kevin Puskaric and Becca Ebner who each broke pool records. Puskaric won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.12 and Ebner touched the wall first in the 100 fly with a time of 56.09.

Ebner, along with Stephanie Fisher, Kerry Sodonis and Julie Kahn, kicked off the meet by setting a new pool record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:45.41.

Heather Kiluk was the other female to win two events, as she swam to first-place finishes in the 400 IM (4:27.42) and 100 back (59.87).

On the men's side, senior Marcus Poteete and junior Sho Koba each picked up two fist-place finishes on the night. Poteete won both the 400 IM (4:10.46) and 100 fly (52.15). Koba won the 200 free by over 2.5 seconds, touching the wall in 1:40.77, and later picked up first in the 100 free with a time of 46.36.

"Sho had a great meet," said Gianiodis. "He swam really well and I'm happy for him because he's been working hard."

Other Spartans finishing first on at the meet included: Laura DeFord (1,000 free), Mike Van Beek (1,000 free), Erinn Wertz (200 free), Fisher (50 free), Joe Schmitt (50 free), Kahn (100 free), Mark Schramm (500 free) and Sarah Biasello (100 breast).

The Spartans showed their strength in the diving events once again as David Gary, Alicia Mokedanz and Jordan Jackson all qualified for NCAA Zones. Garry took first on the one-meter board with a 280.79 and first on the three-meter with a score of 323.25. Jackson, a sophomore, scored a 312.90 on the one-meter which was good for first, while Mokedanz took second with a 307.27.

The men and women's teams will be back in the pool next week at the Northwestern Invitational in Evanston, Ill., Nov. 21-23.

Dr. E.W. Maglischo
