vs Oakland

200Fr 1:43.94

100Fr 47.08

400Frリレー 3:09.22
Koba 48.24
Strickler
Laroque
MaCnichols

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Three pool records fell as the Michigan State men's and women's swimming & diving teams swept a pair of dual meets with Oakland Friday night at the Charles McCaffree Pool. The men won by a 144-99 margin and the women took a 145-98 decision. Senior Adam Schmitt set a pool record in the 200 free early in the evening and freshman Kevin Puskaric set a pool record of his own in the 200 breast at the end of the meet.

Schmitt set the new 200 free mark with a time of 1:38.34. The previous pool record was held by Cameron Mull in 1995 (1:38.63). He also won the 100 free (44.78) and swam the lead leg of the 400 free relay. Puskaric, who clocked an NCAA `B' standard qualifying time of 2:00.04 last weekend at Ohio State, bested that mark with a pool-record time of 1:59.14 in the 200 breast.

The men also set a pool record in the 400 free relay, the evening's final event.

Sophomore diver Ivan Zalessov won both boards, posting a score of 336.00 in the three-meter and a 291.45 in the one-meter. Junior diver Danielle Williams also swept both boards on the women's side, racking up a three-meter diving score of 307.35. She added a 261.00 total off the one-meter board.

Freshman L. Colby Ward had his best performance as a Spartan, winning both distance freestyle swims. He clocked a 9:17.36 in the 1,000 free and added a time of 4:37.29 in the 500 free. Sophomore Krzysztof Olszewski finished second in both events, giving MSU a 32-6 edge in distance points.

Sophomore Jonathan LaRocque also won the 200 back (1:52.48) - just ahead of Gabe Strickler (1:52.59).

In addition to Williams' work on the boards, junior Heather Kiluk led the Spartan women swimmers with a pair of wins. Kiluk took first in the 200 IM (2:05.75) and the 500 free (4:59.05).

Four other Spartans would register wins on the night. Sophomore Mara Loniewski won the 200 free (1:54.79) while Rebecca Ebner won the 200 fly (2:12.90). Another pair of sophomores, Erinn Wertz and Sarah Biasello, won the 100 free and the 200 breast, respectively.

MSU honored six seniors - Tony Grace, Matt McNichols, Danny Schemmel, Adam Schmitt, Matt Torres and Jason Vadney - and one graduating junior before the meet.

The men's swimming & diving team concludes the season with a 5-6 dual meet record, while the women finish 5-7. The Spartan women's swimming & diving team will compete at the Big Ten Championship on Feb. 14-16 in Columbus, Ohio. The men's league championship meet will be held in Ann Arbor Feb. 21-23.

Spartans Sweep Swimming Dual Meet At Valparaiso

Junior Heather Kiluk won the 200 free and 100 fly to lead MSU to a victory over Valparaiso.

Jan. 11, 2008

Complete Results

VALPARAISO, Ind. - The Michigan State men's and women's swimming & diving teams swept a dual meet at Valparaiso Friday night, with the men's team winning, 131-71, and the Spartan women taking a 135-82 decision. Sophomore Joe Schmitt won the 200 IM and 100 breast to lead the men, while junior Heather Kiluk and sophomore Laura DeFord each won two events in the women's meet.

The MSU men touched the wall first in each of the 12 events. Schmitt clocked a 1:58.21 in the 200 IM to give the Spartans their fifth win in as many events to put the dual scoring way out of reach. Schmitt later added a winning time of 59.25 in the 100 breast, but MSU had moved its athletes to exhibition scoring by then. Freshman Rickey Forrest and junior Michael VanBeek posted wins in the 1,000 free and the 200 free, respectively, to give MSU a huge lead early. Junior Mark Rogers also added a first-place effort in the 50 free with a time of 21.87.

Sophomores David Garry (327.10) and Ivan Zalessov (298.15) took the top spots in one-meter diving, and sophomore Sho Koba won the 100 fly (51.49). Fellow sophomore Marcus Poteete placed first in the 100 back (53.10) to close out the men's scoring before the Spartans began exhibition scoring the final events of the evening.

"We swam a lot of people in off-events," head coach Matt Gianiodis said. "This team has been through some adversity recently, and I am very proud with the way they responded and performed. Everyone was positive and we achieved what we came here to do tonight."

In the women's portion of the evening, Kiluk placed first in the 100 fly (59.06) and the 200 free (1:54.85) and DeFord added wins in the 200 IM (2:09.88) and the 500 free (5:10.39). The Spartan women were equally as dominant in their meet, winning nine of 12 events. Freshman Jordan Jackson registered a tally of 252.65 en route to winning the one-meter board, her first career victory. Sophomore Erinn Wertz took first in the 100 back (1:01.04) and fellow sophomore Sarah Biasello won the 100 breast (1:06.20). MSU also won both women's relays, with freshmen Stephanie Fisher and Rebecca Ebner competing in each event.

MSU's weekend in Indiana continues with a dual at Purdue on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Spartans met Purdue in a quad meet at Penn State earlier this season, with the Boilermakers coming out ahead in both the men's and women's competitions.
