EVANSTON, Ill. - Katie Edwards came out on top for the second day in a row, capturing first on the three-meter board at the Northwestern TYR Invitational on Saturday. Six Michigan State swimmers qualified for super finals in day two of the invitational, as the Spartan women dropped to third place with 605.5 points, while the men remain in third with 562 points at the end of the second day of competition. The Northwestern men (868.5) and women (916) continue to hold onto first place after Saturday's events.
"We had great performances by Heather Kiluk, Krzysztof Olszewski, Amber Schroeder, Adam Schmitt, Marcus Poteete, and Sasha Lewerenz to put them into the super final," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "We're running out of gas a little bit, but we're competing hard which is key for us, so we'll see what we can do tomorrow."
Edward captured first on the three-meter with a score of 276.15, and was followed by teammate Allison Sayer with a second-place finish (274.50) for the second day in a row.
Ivan Zalessov led the men's squad, capturing second with 312.50 points. Northwestern's Alex Kiaie bested him, who scored 328.70 points to win the event.
The MSU women began the day by grabbing third place in the 200-yard medley relay, with the team of Lewerenz, Laura DeFord, Megan Reponen and Julie Kahn finishing in 1:48.88. The men's "A" relay team of Gabe Strickler, Poteete, Matt McNichols and Joseph Schmitt swam to a fourth-place finish with a time of 1:35.01.
Kiluk captured fourth in the super final of the women's 400 IM with a time of 4:36.37. She was followed by teammate Emma Schaefer, who took fifth (first in the consolation final), hitting the wall at 4:31.47.
Olszewski also earned a place in the super final of the men's 400 IM and turned in a solid performance to capture second (4:02.48).
Schroeder bettered her qualifying time in the 100-yard butterfly in the super final, earning fourth-place (59.12) in the event. Reponen placed second in the consolation final (sixth overall) with a time of 59.16.
Jason Vadney was the top finisher for the MSU men in the 100 butterfly, coming in tenth place (51.66).
In the 200 freestyle, Mara Loniewski (1:55.21), Marlys Fuqua (1:56.48) and Jenny Korn (1:56.55) each earned spots in the consolation final, finishing in ninth, 11th and 12th places, respectively.
For the men, Adam Schmitt finished in fourth place in the super final of the 200 freestyle with a time of (1:39.57). He was followed by freshman Sho Koba, who captured first in the consolation final (fifth overall) with a time of 1:40.77.
Four MSU swimmers earned a place in the consolation final of the women's 100 breaststroke, with DeFord (1:07.70) and Sarah Biasello (1:08.17) leading the group with sixth- and seventh-place finishes, respectively.
Poteete turned in a time of 58.37 to finish in third place of the super final of the men's 100 breaststroke.
Although she bettered her first-place qualifying time of 57.37, Lewerenz dropped back to third place (57.28) in the super final of the 100 backstroke. Carly Zenk (59.94) took second in the consolation final to earn a sixth-place finish overall.
Jonathan LaRocque led the Spartans in the 100 backstroke, taking eighth in the 100 backstroke, with a 52.68 finish.
The Spartans closed out the day with fourth-place finishes by the women's 800 freestyle relay team of Loniewski, Korn, Fuqua and Kahn (7:49.79), and the men's team of Vadney, McNichols, Koba and Adam Schmitt (6:49.53).
Michigan State will complete action at the Northwestern TYR Invitational Sunday. Prelims will begin at 9 a.m. and finals are scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
