EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's and women's swimming and diving teams battled it out with Iowa on Saturday, with the MSU women coming out on top with a final score of 159.5-140.5. The men were unable to pull off a victory, falling to the Hawkeyes 152-148.
The Spartans dropped the 400 medley relays on both the men's and women's side, giving the Hawkeyes a chance to grab the momentum early in the day.
The women rebounded with two-three finishes by Marlys Fuqua and Emma Schaefer in the 1000 freestyle, while Krzsztof Olszewski grabbed first place for the men.
In the 200 freestyle Mara Loniewski captured a win with a time of 1:54.25.
The men went one-two-three in the 200 freestyle; Adam Schmitt came out on top with a time of 1:40.07, he was followed by Sho Koba (1:42.91) and Jason Vadney (1:43.97).
In the 100 backstroke, freshman Sasha Lewerenz claimed first finishing in 57.64, narrowly out touching Alison Gschwend (57.84) of Iowa. Cassandra Hamilton grabbed third for the Spartans with a time of 59.91.
The men's team was given a boost in the 100 backstroke with a win by Gabe Strickler (52.34).
In the 100 breastroke, Sarah Biasello (1:08.46) and Laura DeFord (1:08.57) finished in second and third places, respectively.
In the 200 butterfly, Heather Kiluk grabbed third place for the women, while Olszewski took third for the men's team.
Following the 100 breaststroke and 200 butterfly, the Iowa men pulled ahead, but MSU was able to regain a lead after the 50 freestyle, with first and second place finishes by Joseph Schmitt (21.97) and David Leassard (21.99).
Julie Kahn won the 50 freestyle for the women, and Elizabeth DeJonge took third. Joseph Schmitt and David Lessard finished first and second for them men with times of 21.97 and 21.99, respectively.
Kahn also went on to take second in the 100 freestyle, followed by teammate Mara Loniewski in third. Schmitt, Vadney and Koba went one-two-three for the second time of the day in the 100 freestyle.
Lewerenz and Hamilton took first and third, also the second time of the day, in the 200 backstroke, and Biasello and Deford took second and third for the second time of the day in the 200 breaststroke.
Mara Loniewski captured a win in the 500 freestyle (5:03.38), followed by Marlys Fuqua in third. On the men's side, Olszewski took second in the event.
Megan Reponen took third in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.59, while Jason Vadney captured first (51.52) in the event for the men, followed by Matt McNichols in second.
In the 200 backstroke, Strickler placed second for the men in 1:55.67.
The women were given a big boost at the end of the individual events, with a sweep of the 200 IM; Heather Kiluk took first (2:08.24), followed by Schaeffer (2:08.72) and Lewerenz (2:09.51).
The same event for the men saw Schmitt collect another first place (1:55.54).
Going into the final event, the 200 freestyle relays, the outcomes were clear, but the teams pressed on. The men turned in one-two finishes with the MSU "A" relay taking first with a time of 1:25.94, followed by the "B" team in second (1:25.97). The women took second and third.
"I am disappointed with how our men performed," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "We need to learn that in the Big Ten you have to show up every day, and our young guys need to learn that they have to get their hand to the wall first.
"Our women did well. I'm especially impressed with our IM swimmers, and the consistent diving that came through for us again today," said Gianiodis.
MSU Divers Katie Edwards (294.98), Amy Schmidt (282.22) and Allison Sayers (280.27) all turned in NCAA Regional qualifying scores on the three-meter board, finishing in the top three spots. The women also swept the one meter; Alycia Mokedanz captured first (277.20), followed by Edwards (273.52), both setting NCAA Regional qualifying scores. Schmidt rounded out the top three with a score of 255.07.
The men were slightly less successful, with the only top-three performance coming from David Garry, a third-place finish on the one-meter board with a score of 282.07.
Michigan State will return to action on Friday, Nov. 10 at 5 p.m. against Notre Dame in South Bend.

Iowa Men, Michigan State Women Split Big 10 Matchup
The University of Iowa's men and women's swimming and diving team faced the Michigan State Spartans Saturday afternoon in East Lansing, Michigan. The Hawkeye men defeated the Spartans 152-148 but the Iowa women fell, 159.5-140.5. The Hawkeye men improve their record to 2-2 (1-2 Big Ten), and the Iowa women drop to 1-3 (0-3 Big Ten).

Junior Dragos Agache led the Hawkeye men with wins in the 100 yard breaststroke (57.61) and 200 yard breaststroke (2:09.31). Sophomores James Dragon (200 Fly - 1:55.83), Nick Divan (500 Free - 4:36.92) and freshman Wil Whaley (200 Back - 1:52.72) all picked up event wins for the Hawkeyes. Freshman Michael Gilligan picked up his first collegiate victory in one-meter diving, with 310.80, and teammate Frank Van Dijkhuizen finished second with 304.57; both scores met NCAA regional qualifying standards. In three-meter diving, Van Dijkhuizen took first (328.65), while Gilligan came in second (326.78).
Senior Emmy Haeger led the Iowa women with wins in the 100 (1:05.93) and 200 breast (2:24.29). Sophomore Ashley Dell (1,000 Free - 10:17.65), and freshmen Margie Chamberlin (200 Fly - 2:06.68), Christine Kuczek (100 Free - 52.89) and Laura Mozdzen (100 Fly - 57.95) all added individual victories for the Hawkeyes. Iowa also swept the 400 medley relay (3:54.00) and the 200 free relay (1:36.87).
The Hawkeyes will return to action next weekend when they travel to Columbia, MO, to participate in the Mizzou Dual Meet Challenge, hosted by the University of Missouri. Along with Iowa and Missouri, Louisville, Drury, and Southern Illinois will be competing. Friday's action starts at 5 p.m., Saturday at 9 a.m., and Sunday at 9 a.m. All meets will be held at the Mizzou Aquatic Center.
