WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Michigan State men's swimming and diving team completed competition at the Big Ten Championships on Saturday (Feb. 28) in West Lafayette, Ind., with another strong performance from kevin Puskaric and Joe Schmitt. Puskaric placed fourth in the 200 breaststroke with at time of 1:57.63 a day after placing sixth in the 100 breaststroke.

"From where we were two years to where we are today is just a difference of night and day," said Gianiodis. "This conference is just so good. We had a really good season and hopefully, we can build on it later this spring, summer and into next fall."

MSU's 400 freestyle relay team turned in a 2:58.82 but Joe Schmitt swam a varsity record 44.48 in the first leg of the event. The school record of 44.51 was set in 1992 by Greg Mihalik.

Other Spartans competing in the finals on Saturday included Colby Ward (15:28.25) and Ricky Forrest (15:29.08) in the 1,650 freestyle and Jon LaRocque (1:48.77) in the 200 backstroke.

"These seniors have been great and some of the best student-athletes I've ever been around," Gianiodis said.

MSU finished the weekend in 10th place.

今年はベストもいくつか出て良かったと思います。来年は最後の年になりますので、思いっきり活躍してくれればと思います。

Puskaric Places Sixth in 100 Breaststroke at Big Ten Championships

Kevin Puskaric placed sixth in the 100 breast at the Big Ten Championships.

Feb. 27, 2009

Results

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Sophomore kevin Puskaric swam a 54.21 and took sixth place in the 100 breaststroke and was the top Spartan finisher on day two of the Big Ten Championships on Friday (Feb. 27) in West Lafayette, Ind.

"Kevin was close to a varsity record and had a pretty good swim," said Gianiodis.

The Spartans' 200 medley relay team suffered an unfortunate break when junior Jon LaRocque's suit suffered a tear and slowed him down. The team of LaRocque, Schmitt, Poteete and Massman finished with a time of 1:29.27 which was good for eighth place.

"It's like we can't catch a break right now and Jon's suit ripping really hurt us," said MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis. "But, I'm encouraged about tomorrow."

Individually, LaRocque took 12th in the 100 backstroke (48.94).

MSU's 800 freestyle relay team of Sho Koba, Mark Schramm, Colby Ward and Matt Massman swam a 6:39.68.

Poteete touched the wall in 48.36 to place 15th in the 100 butterfly.

Saturday will be the final day of the conference championships with prelims beginning at noon and the finals taking place at 7 p.m.

2009 Big10 Day1

Men's Swimming & Diving Completes Day One at Big Ten Championships

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Michigan State men's swimming and diving team competed on Thursday (Feb. 26) at the Big Ten Championships hosted by Purdue.

With just six events on Thursday, MSU's strong 400 medley relay team of Jon LaRocque, kevin Puskaric, Marcus Poteete and Joe Schmitt looked to score valuable points. Unfortunately, the relay team was disqualified for an early start - erasing what would have been a sixth-place finish.

"It's tough to lose the relay," said MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis. "We had four really good splits. But we have two days left of competition and we will rebound."

MSU's 200 free relay team of Schmitt, Poteete, LaRocque and Massman turned in a 1:21.01.

Competition continues Friday with prelims and noon with the finals taking place at 7 p.m. The Spartans currently stand in 10th place.

Men's Swimming and Diving Falls to Michigan in Final Dual Meet of Season

Marcus Poteete's 48.97 in the 100 fly broke a pool record.

Feb. 8, 2009

Results

EAST LANSING, Mich. - In its final dual meet of the season, the MSU men's swimming and diving team fell to third-ranked Michigan, 176-109, Sunday (Feb. 8) afternoon at McCaffree Pool. It was the final home meet for four Spartan seniors- Krysztof Olszewski, Marcus Poteete, Mark Rogers and Michael VanBeek.

"I thought our guys competed really hard," said MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis. "Michigan is a very good team. I was a little disappointed with our relays because I thought we would be a little quicker. Overall, it was a good meet for us and we'll see what we can do in a few weeks at the Big Ten Championships."

The most exciting event of the day was the 100 butterfly which saw two swims break a 27-year-old pool record held by Mark Spitz. The Spartans' Poteete finished second with a 48.97 while Michigan's Chris Brady set the new pool mark with a time of 47.70. The previous pool record set in 1972 by Spitz was 49.31.

"I thought Marcus swam great," Gianiodis said. "When it gets time for him to perform, he usually does really well."

In the next event, the Spartans' Sho Koba was just touched out in the 200 freestyle by the Wolverines' Matt Patton (1:38.79). Koba also had a second-place performance in the 100 free with a time of 46.71.

Colby Ward turned in another strong swim in the 1650 - posting a time of 15:50.86 which was good for second place.

Ricky Forrest posted the first Spartan win of the afternoon when he swam a 1:51.80 in the 200 butterfly. Sophomore kevin Puskaric followed with another top finish in the 200 breaststroke. Puskaric's time of 2:00.27 was just over a second slower than his pool record set one year ago.

On the boards, the Spartans Brian Akers scored a 260.55 in the one meter and 264.90 on the three meter board - both good for third place.

The Spartans (3-6) will next compete at the Big Ten Championships, Feb. 26-28, in Ann Arbor.

Results

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. - The Michigan State men's and women's swimming and diving teams each fell to Oakland Saturday (Jan. 31) afternoon in Rochester Hills. Both duals were decided by slim margins with the Grizzlies' women's team edging MSU, 151-149, while the Spartan men's team fell, 153-145.

"Both meets were really tight," said MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis. "We swam well today."

On the men's side, kevin Puskaric continued his strong sophomore campaign with two more first-place finishes in the breaststroke events. He won the 100 with a time of 56.24 and took first in the 200 by over seven seconds with a time of 2:00.24 - good enough to rank in the MSU all-time top ten.

Sophomore Colby Ward led the men's distance swimmers by taking first in the 500 free (4:33.83). Senior Marcus Poteete turned in one of his fastest times in the season in the 100 butterfly (49.64) and touched out OU's Aaron Holdsworth by just .06 to take first place. Poteete grabbed his second victory of the meet in the 200 IM with a time of 1:51.62.

"Marcus and Kevin both had a great meet," Gianiodis said. "Colby was one of the stars for us as well."

Ward also had a strong showing in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 9:21.57 that was good for first place.

Sophomore Becca Ebner led the women's effort with two more first-place finishes in the butterfly events. She won the 200 by over two seconds, with a time of 2:05.13 and took first place by a decided margin in the 100, with a time of 56.96.

"Becca did a great job in her events today," Gianiodis said. "She swam really well."

Senior Heather Kiluk (1:54.35) and junior Emma Schaefer (1:55.84) finished one-two in the 200 free while junior Sara Biasello also picked up a first-place finish in the 200 breststroke (2:22.72).

With the score tight, the Grizzlies' women's team picked up the win in the final event of the meet as their 400 freestyle relay team touched out the Spartans by just .20.

Senior diver Danielle Williams carried over her strong performance with another excellent showing on Saturday as she won the one-meter with a score of 285.53. Fellow senior Alycia Mokedanz also dove well again, as she edged out freshman Sarah Clay, 283.65-281.92, on the three-meter platform.

For the men, junior Dave Garry posted a 302.85 to take first on the one-meter board and a 319.50 on the three-meter platform. Both scores were good for first place.

"We did OK and we'll see what we can do now," Gianiodis added. "We have two weeks until the Big Ten Championships."

Saturday's meet was the final dual of the season for the women's team (4-6-1) while the men (3-5) will host Michigan in its season finale next Sunday (Feb. 8) at 3 p.m. at McCaffree Pool. The women's Big Ten Championships will take place Feb. 18-21.

The Michigan State swimming and diving teams competed at the first session of the Shamrock Invitational in South Bend, Ind., on Friday (Jan. 23). Denver and West Virginia, in addition to host Notre Dame, also competed.

"Stephanie Fisher and kevin Puskaric had great days," said MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis. "We dove fairly well today and we improved a little bit from last week. We're not there yet so we'll see what we can do tomorrow. That will be the key."

Early on, sophomore Ricky Forest placed fifth in the 500 free with a time of 4:35.63. Denver's Blake Worsley won the event with a time of 4:21.98, breaking former Spartan John Munley's nine-year-old pool record.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - With stronger performances on day two, the Michigan State men's and women's swimming and diving teams wrapped up competition at the Shamrock Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 24) in South Bend, Ind. The women's team tied Denver at 181, defeated West Virginia (187-168) and fell to Notre Dame (259.5-106.5). The men's squad also downed the Mountaineers (200-168) but fell to Denver (225-142) and Notre Dame (232-138).

"We swam better today than yesterday and certainly better than last week," said MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis. "There is still a long way to go, but we had some kids that had some really good swims."

The men's 200 medley relay of Jon LaRocque, Joe Schmitt, Marcus Poteete and Matt Massman led off the morning session with a second-place finish and a time of 1:33.40.

In the 100 butterfly events, sophomore Becca Ebner turned in a time of 57.03 while Poteete posted a 49.64 on the men's side.

After junior Sho Koba and freshman Mark Schramm went three-four in the 200 freestyle with times of 1:41.64 and 1:42.20, respectively, a trio of Spartan women finished within .19 of one another in the 100 breaststroke. Laura DeFord (1:06.33), Sarah Biasello (1:06.37) and Kerry Sodonis (1:06.52) placed third, fourth and fifth in the event, respectively.

A pair of sophomores in kevin Puskaric and Stephanie Fisher then claimed the first Spartan victories of the day in back-to-back events. Puskaric took first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.37 while Fisher won the 100 back in 56.77.

On the women's one-meter board, freshman Sarah Clay was the top performer; scoring a 270.45, which was good for third. Alycia Mokedanz (265.20) and Danielle Williams (264.75) followed in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

Fisher continued to swim well in the afternoon session by taking third place in the 200 back (2:05.20).

"Sho (Koba) and (Stephanie) Fisher were our top-two standouts today," said Gianiodis. "They did a great job. Kevin (Puskaric) winning his events was great, too."

Koba took third in the 100 free and was a part of the third-place 400 free relay team. Puskaric added his second first-place swim of the invitational in the 200 breaststroke (2:02.06), beating out Notre Dame's Daniel Rave by .79.

The women's team will jump back in the pool on Friday (Jan. 30) when it hosts Michigan in its last home meet of the season. The men's and women's teams will compete on Saturday (Jan.31) at Oakland.

Spartan Swimming and Diving Teams Fall to Purdue

Becca Ebner now has 10 first-place finishes in butterfly events this season.

Jan. 17, 2009

Results

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's and women's swimming and diving teams each fell to Purdue Saturday (Jan. 17) afternoon at McCaffree Pool. The Spartan women's team is now 3-4 on the year while men's team falls to 2-2. Purdue's men's and women's teams, each ranked 15th in the nation, both improved to 5-0.

"Purdue is very good and very well coached," said MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis. "They were ready to go and we weren't right from the beginning. I think our effort was really good, but for whatever reason we were really off."

The Spartan men's 200 medley relay, consisting of Jon LaRocque, Joe Schmitt, Marcus Poteete and Matt Massman, got the team's first win of the day with a time of 1:33.57. Laura DeFord, who won two events in the meet, posted a time of 1:06.05 in the 100 breaststroke to pick up her first win of the day. Sophomore Becca Ebner, another two-event winner on Saturday, followed in the next event with another win - posting a time of 2:04.42 in the 200 fly.

On the boards, Spartan senior Danielle Williams recorded MSU's best finish of the meet, placing second on the three-meter board (286.74), followed by teammate Jordan Jackson (276.00) in third. Purdue swept the top-four spots on the men's one-meter board.

MSU's Sarah Clay took third on the one-meter board with a score of 261.37.

DeFord completed her sweep of the breaststroke events when she swam a 2:22.50 in the 100 for her second first-place finish of the day. Ebner followed just four events later, also winning her second event of the day, as she posted her second fastest time of the year in the 100 fly - 56.36. Ebner has now taken first place in 10 of the 12 butterfly events she has competed in this season.

Senior Heather Kiluk recorded the final first-place swim of the day for the women's team, touching the wall in 2:07.89 in the 200 IM.

The men's 400 free relay squad of Sho Koba, Mark Schramm, Matt Massman and Joe Schmitt closed out the meet with a first-place finish and a time of 3:07.23.

"I have to give big credit to Ricky Forrest," said Gianiodis. "He had a tough triple and he was tough on all three of them-really competitive. Also, Julie Kahn had a very good meet too, as did Laura DeFord. Becca was really steady again. We have a few weeks to kind of sort things out and we clearly have a lot of work ahead of us."

Forrest posted two top-three finishes on the day as he placed second in the 200 fly (1:52.01) and third in the 500 free (4:39.56).

Both the men's and women's teams return to action Friday and Saturday (Jan. 23-24) at the Shamrock Invitational in South Bend, Ind.

Swimming and Diving Sweeps Ball State

Joe Schmitt won the 200 yard IM on Saturday.

Dec. 13, 2008

Final Stats

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State swimming and diving teams defeated Ball State Saturday (Dec. 13) afternoon at McCaffree Pool. The men's team won 157.5-142.5 while the women won 158-138.

"We tried to give more of our kids the opportunity to swim well today, so I'm pretty encouraged by that," said MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis. "It was a little discouraging in that we lost a lot of close races that I thought we should have won. We had a lot of people swim well today though."

The Spartans got off to a quick start in the meet's first event - the women's 200-yard medley relay as Stephanie Fisher, Kerry Sodonis, Becca Ebner and Julie Kahn posted a time of 1:46.12, which was good for first.

Mike Van Beek started a string of three-consecutive Spartan wins when he took first in the 200-yard free with a time of 1:43.62. Sophomore Becca Ebner and senior Marcus Poteete then followed with a pair of first-place finishes in the 100 back with times of 59.89 and 53.12, respectively.

Two events later, MSU put together three more consecutive wins. After Joe Schmitt won the 100 breaststroke in 57.95, the Spartans' Heather Kiluk (2:06.19) and Ricky Forest (1:50.10) swept 200 butterfly.

Two events later, MSU's Chris Olszewski won the 400 IM with a time of 4:00.59 to give the Spartan men a slim 77-73 advantage after 19 events. MSU's women's team also was in the lead, 77-73, after 19 events.

The Spartan women divers put up a strong performance in the three-meter competition, sweeping the first three places. Senior Danielle Williams led the way with a 329.34, followed by Sarah Clay (297.00) and Jordan Jackson (263.55).

David Garry (311.10) and Brian Akers (261.97) placed one and two, respectively, on the one-meter board.

After the first diving break, the Spartans came out strong, winning six of the next seven events. Kahn (52.30) and Matt Massman (46.90) each won the 100 free, Cassie Hamilton (2:08.11) and Brian Rockwell (1:55.22) each placed first in the 200 backstroke. Sophomore kevin Puskaric (2:02.26) and Kiluk (5:03.65) followed, winning the 200 breaststroke and 500 freestyle, respectively.

With just four swimming events remaining, the Spartan divers help widen the MSU leads. Garry scored a lifetime-best 336.90 on the three-meter to lead MSU while Williams, Clay and Alycia Mokedanz took the top-three spots on the one-meter board.

The Spartans will hit the road for Florida after Christmas for their annual training trip and get back into action on Jan. 1, 2009, against Trinity Prep Aquatics and Limestone College.

Spartans Break Records on First Day of TYR Sport Conference Cup

Senior Marcus Poteete swam a personal best in the 200 IM on Friday night.

Nov. 21, 2008

Final Stats

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Michigan State swimming and diving teams each turned in strong performances on day one of the TYR Sport Conference Cup in Evanston, Ill. on Friday (Nov. 21) night. After day one of the three team invitational, the MSU men's team is just four points out of first place with a total of 405 points. The women's team is also in second place with 414.5 points. Northwestern leads both the men's and women's competitions with 409 and 501.5, respectively.

Several swimmers headlined the Spartans' effort as senior Heather Kiluk, junior Jon LaRocque and the women's 400 medley relay team all set new varsity records. Kiluk won the 200 Yard IM with a time of 2:02.44 - breaking her pervious best, and school record, of 2:04.20. The women's 400 medley relay team of sophomores Stephanie Fisher and Becca Ebner, freshman Kerry Sodonis and junior Erinn Wertz closed out the evening with second place finish but their time of 3:45.80 set new school record.

"It was great, mainly because they had such good splits," said MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis. "I was here when the last record was broken so it is impressive."

The Spartans swept the 200 free relays as both the men's and women's teams placed first. Wertz, Fisher, senior Julie Kahn and junior Kara Wackerle swam the event for the women's team while LaRocque, senior Marcus Poteete and juniors Joe Schmitt and Matt Massman competed for the men.

In the morning session, LaRocque swam a 20.13 in the 50 free which broke the previous best mark of 20.17, set in 1990 by Mark Lisenby. Massman won the 50 free finals with a time of 20.44.

Poteete posted his best swim ever in the 200 IM and took second place with a time of 1:49.68. Schmitt also turned in a first place performance with a mark of 25.33 in the 50 yard breaststroke.

Another solid swim came courtesy of sophomore Alison Johnson, who cut close to seven seconds off her 500 free time to qualify for the Spartans' training trip.

"What Alison did really embodies what our whole team is about," said Gianiodis. "She really did a nice job tonight. We had great swims all over the place."

On the one-meter board, senior Danielle Williams placed first with a score of 290.40 while sophomore Jordan Jackson scored a 275.48 which was good for third.

The three teams - MSU, Northwestern and Kenyon - will be back in action tomorrow with the prelims beginning at 11 a.m. EST and the finals beginning at 6 p.m. EST.

Swimming and Diving Teams Sweep GVSU

Kevin Puskaric set a pool record in winning the 100 breaststroke in a time of 56.12.

Nov. 14, 2008

JENISON, Mich. - The Michigan State swimming and diving teams each picked up wins over Grand Valley State on Friday (Nov. 14) as the men's team won 158.5 - 82.5 while the women's team cruised to a 169-72 victory. The Spartans were dominant, wining 25 of the evening's 26 events. It was the second consecutive win for the women's team, which is now 2-3, and the first victory of the year for the men, who now stand at 1-1 on the season.

The dual meet took place at Jenison High School with a crowd of more than 650 in attendance.

"I think we had a record crowd tonight," said MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis. "Grand Rapids is a very good swimming community and I think everyone appreciated being here tonight. I hope we can do this again next year."

The Spartans turned in several exceptional performances and perhaps the most noteworthy were by sophomores kevin Puskaric and Becca Ebner who each broke pool records. Puskaric won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.12 and Ebner touched the wall first in the 100 fly with a time of 56.09.

Ebner, along with Stephanie Fisher, Kerry Sodonis and Julie Kahn, kicked off the meet by setting a new pool record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:45.41.

Heather Kiluk was the other female to win two events, as she swam to first-place finishes in the 400 IM (4:27.42) and 100 back (59.87).

On the men's side, senior Marcus Poteete and junior Sho Koba each picked up two fist-place finishes on the night. Poteete won both the 400 IM (4:10.46) and 100 fly (52.15). Koba won the 200 free by over 2.5 seconds, touching the wall in 1:40.77, and later picked up first in the 100 free with a time of 46.36.

"Sho had a great meet," said Gianiodis. "He swam really well and I'm happy for him because he's been working hard."

Other Spartans finishing first on at the meet included: Laura DeFord (1,000 free), Mike Van Beek (1,000 free), Erinn Wertz (200 free), Fisher (50 free), Joe Schmitt (50 free), Kahn (100 free), Mark Schramm (500 free) and Sarah Biasello (100 breast).

The Spartans showed their strength in the diving events once again as David Gary, Alicia Mokedanz and Jordan Jackson all qualified for NCAA Zones. Garry took first on the one-meter board with a 280.79 and first on the three-meter with a score of 323.25. Jackson, a sophomore, scored a 312.90 on the one-meter which was good for first, while Mokedanz took second with a 307.27.

The men and women's teams will be back in the pool next week at the Northwestern Invitational in Evanston, Ill., Nov. 21-23.
